CLARE BAEK, Ph.D.I am a postdoctoral scholar in the Digital Learning Lab, University of California Irvine, working with Dr. Mark Warschauer. I received my Ph.D. in Urban Education Policy with Educational Psychology concentration from the University of Southern California Rossier School of Education.
My research focuses on understanding mechanisms that lead to increased STEM achievement among students with disabilities, students of color, students from low-income families, and multilingual students. Specifically, I focus on the role that digital learning environments play in promoting academic achievement and supporting teacher development to increase educational equity among underrepresented groups in STEM. My work uses an asset-based approach, and focuses on how digital technologies can build on students' cultural and linguistic assets. In my main current project, "Deepening Computational Thinking for English Learners by Integrating Community-Based Environmental Literacy" (NSF funded), I am working with teachers in predominantly Latinx elementary schools in Southern California to co-design computer science curricula integrated with community-based environmental literacy and data literacy that meet the needs of their students. In this and other projects, I use a diverse set of methods from design-based implementation research, causal experiments, and educational data science to understand both student and teacher learning and development in digital learning environments. |
